Seton Gastroparesis Center, Austin, TX
Description Seton Gastroparesis Center, Austin, TX
The Seton Gastroparesis Center is a centralized diagnosis and treatment center for patients suffering from gastroparesis, a condition in which the stomach nerves and muscles do not function properly to help empty food into the intestines. The center is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who offer a full range of treatments for the disease process and is the only program in Central Texas offering Gastric Electrical Stimulation therapy for individuals living with chronic, intractable (resistant to medications) nausea and vomiting due to gastroparesis. We're proud to extend hope to patients suffering from the symptoms of gastroparesis, which can often lead to decreased quality of life. Your doctor will likely ask for some additional testing (after taking a complete medical history and performing a physical examination) in order to determine a diagnosis. This testing may include: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and Gastric emptying test (GET).
Gastroparesis is often a chronic condition that cannot be cured, so treatment options help patients manage the condition. The Seton Gastroparesis Center offers a full complement of services including: Medication: Gastroparesis can often be managed with medication to help control the nausea and vomiting and/or stimulate the stomach muscles. Your doctor may prescribe combinations of medications or different medications to determine which is the most effective. Dietary counseling and diet modification: Dietary therapy may include following certain dietary requirements, such as eating small meals throughout the day and avoiding foods that are difficult to digest such as fatty foods, legumes, and citrus fruits. Jejunostomy tube placement: A jejunostomy tube allows food to bypass your stomach.
Liquid nutrition, fluids and medication are delivered directly to the small intestine through the tube during attacks of gastroparesis. The tube can be passed through your mouth or nose, or surgically placed through your abdominal wall. Surgical gastro-jejunostomy: A gastrojejunostomy is the surgical creation of an opening in the stomach to connect it to the upper portion of the small intestine so that food passes directly from the stomach into the intestine. Surgical resection of the stomach: For severe cases and patients who do not respond to the established treatment options, the doctor may recommend surgery to remove the lower part or all of the stomach.
Gastric Electrical Stimulation: Gastric Electrical Stimulation is a surgical option offered to patients who are resistant to medication and other treatments. A "pacemaker" device is implanted and transmits mild electrical pulses to change the nerve functions of the stomach, relieving symptoms of nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The Seton Gastroparesis Center is the only program in Central Texas that offers this treatment.
